Yours Truly by Kirsty Greenwood
Your bum does not look big in that dress.
Mmm, it tastes delicious!
Of course you’re better looking than Jon Hamm.
Newly engaged Natalie Butterworth is an easy-going girl. She’ll do anything for a quiet life and if telling a few teensy white lies keeps her friends and family happy, then so what? It’s not like they’ll ever discover what she’s really thinking…
Until one night, thanks to a pub hypnotist, Natalie’s most private thoughts begin to bubble up and pop out of her mouth. Things get very messy indeed. Especially when some sticky home truths offend her fiancé.
Natalie must track down the hypnotist before the wedding is officially cancelled. So along with bad influence bestie Meg, Natalie finds herself in the Yorkshire Parish of Little Trooley – a small village bursting with big secrets, nosy old folk and intriguing Wellington-wearing men.
When the girls get stranded in the village with no means of escape and no way to break the hypnotist’s spell, Natalie is forced to face the truths she has been avoiding her whole life…
Natalie is a pushover and a people pleaser, always saying yes, always at her own expense. She is weeks away from her wedding with a dress, haircut, and theme she hates, and an inability to express how she truly feels about any of it.
But when she accidentally gets hypnotized, all of that changes, and suddenly when asked a question she is forced to speak honestly, with some uncomfortable consequences. Suddenly she is no longer the “don’t rock the boat Natalie”. Horrified at the realization of what has happened, Natalie embarks on a quest to track down the hypnotist (not an easy task), and finds herself along the way.
This is a sweet book, and a fast and easy read. I related to Natalie a lot, as I also tend to default to being agreeable to keep the peace (though I hope not to this extent), and I felt sorry for the way that those around her took advantage of her inability to say no. It was especially telling from the reactions of everyone once she did start to speak her mind.
There are some twists and turns, along with the discovery of quite a few secrets in this book, and I enjoyed the way everything unfolded. I especially loved the ending, which did not happen at all like I expected which was a happy surprise.
